Head off Stress
Do you know how to head off some of your work-related stress by what you put into your mouth every day?

A Powerful Strategy to Build Stress Resilience
To build your stress resilience, here is one practical, powerful strategy. This is part of my "loving yourself into success with less stress" arsenal. As always, especially if you have particular health considerations, consult with your doctor or practitioner before making changes to your medical routine.
This is really simple and obvious but you would be amazed at how many people don't do it.
Drink plenty of water.
The standard recommendation is eight glasses a day, or about 64 ounces. Some health practitioners recommend up to 100 ounces a day, or about two liters. Others say we can manage on considerably less water. Most holistic practitioners say that drinking coffee, tea and soda does not count. You need pure water to keep your mind-body connection functioning at its best. Find the drinking water amount that is optimal for you.
Experiment
If you are not sure, experiment. Next time you are feeling fuzzy-headed, frustrated or generally stressed out, or if you're craving a snack from the vending machine, check in with your body. Try drinking a big glass of water and notice how you feel in a few minutes. Staying hydrated can help keep your mind sharp, help prevent stress-hunger snacking, and help process stressful toxins and wastes promptly out of your system.
Too Stressed to Walk to the Water Cooler?
If you tend to feel so pressured by stressful deadlines that you won't get up and walk to the water cooler when you are thirsty, keep a large water bottle or mug on your desk and sip often. For economy (much cheaper than purchasing single serving bottles) and convenience, I used to take gallon jugs of spring water to work to easily refill my 32-ounce mug. I often felt too busy to walk to the other side of our building to get pure water from the dispenser, but I would pour a fresh mug at my desk! Some offices have a purified water club and you can chip in monthly. Or get a water filter pitcher to keep on your desk.
Too Stressed for a Bathroom Break?
If you're like a friend of mine who wouldn't drink much water during the workday because she didn't want to take time for trips to the ladies room, take heed. Instead, my friend drank her quota of water at night and consistently woke up three times to use the bathroom. This approach merely translates work-related stress into more stress on your physical system. Not only was my friend dehydrated during her intensely stressful day, she was shorting herself on sleep, which is a critical element for
balanced, healthful living and stress management.
Support Your Stress Resilience with Pure Water
If you are creating your own stress-management program, give some thought to supporting your resilience factor with adequate water. Whatever type of water you prefer, drinking plenty will help keep you physically balanced and better able to handle stress.
