What's the best water filter pitcher? There are tons of them out there.
Since I can't review them all, I will look at one of the most popular-the Brita 42412 Atlantis. Here is a review of the 6 factors you MUST think about before buying any filter:
Water Pitcher Filter
#1) Size
It only weighs 2 ½ pounds, so it's small. Because of this, it can only hold 1 ½ quarts of water.
Translated--it's not big enough to support a larger family. It's more for smaller groups of people. Otherwise you will be refilling it a LOT.
#2) Price
It sells for , making it quite affordable. However, don't forget that you have to replace the cartridge every 40 gallons. This can really add up over time.
#3) Contaminants removed
It takes out 99% of lead, and it reduces the amounts of chlorine, mercury, and zinc. Since it takes out a lot of chlorine, it does improve the taste and smell. It does NOT take out fluoride.
It is NSF certified, meaning a 3rd party organization has tested it and verified the companies claims. This just adds a good deal of credibility.
#4) Speed
It does purify the water quickly. Generally you can have purified drinking water in 2-3 minutes. All you have to do is flip the lid and pour the water in.
#5) Purification method
It uses ion exchange, which is one of the more popular methods out there.
#6) Consumer reviews
In general, it gets very high customer ratings. The vast majority of people are happy with it.
Verdict-this is a decent filter if you are primarily looking to improve the water taste. However, it doesn't do a lot for your health.
The best filters should take out at least 99% of chlorine, as well as fluoride. This water filter pitcher leaves in too much of both elements to be considered a good buy.
