In the United States, we started treating water back at the end of the 19th century. The goal was to rid our water of waterborne diseases like cholera.

It worked! At least in our country, we no longer have outbreaks of such diseases, which used to kill thousands.

The way water was so successfully treated was to let it settle through a sediment filter, then to chlorinate it. The chlorination killed all the organic contaminants (like the cholera). So that the water wouldn't become recontaminated on its way from the treatment plant to your house, the chlorine was left in.

For decades this method of drinking water treatment seemed to work fine to combat drinking water contamination.

But then our world changed!

We now live in a world made possible by over 80,000 synthetic chemicals, some of which are known to be carcinogenic.

A study done by Ralph Nader's group found over 2,000 carcinogens in American water supplies. Another study of 29 U.S. cities found that all 29 had at least one pesticide in their water. Some had two. And one unlucky city even had three!

Oh, and you know how the chlorine is left in the water after it leaves the treatment facility? Well, under some circumstances, chlorine can combine with organic material and form compounds called trihalomethanes.

Trihalomethanes are carcinogenic. Some scientists even think that our chlorinated water might have lead to the explosive growth in cancers over the past fifty or so years.

You can find everything in your water from lead, to microorganisms in cyst form that can pass through the sediment filters, to pesticides and prescription drugs.

If you think bottled water is going to save you from this modern day plague in the making, I'm sorry to inform you that you're way off base. By far most bottled water comes straight out of the tap.

As a matter of fact, if your bottled water hasn't been transported across state lines, it's not even covered by federal regulations!

So much for modern drinking water treatment!

What can you do about drinking water contamination?

Well, you're just going to have to filter your water yourself at home.

Fortunately, there are a number of good filtration systems on the market. And it doesn't cost all that much for a filter.

Whole house systems make a tremendous improvement in the quality of the water, and the air, in your home. It might have surprised you to hear me say it will improve the air quality, but it will. According to the EPA, "Every home in America has an elevated level of chloroform gas due to the vaporization of chlorine...from the tap and shower water." (What they don't tell you is the dishwasher and the washing machine are not far behind the shower in this regard).

Also, if you live within about three hundred miles of the east coast of the US, radon in the ground water is a big concern to some, and it is an important health-related issue to have it removed from all the water in the house.

If the whole house unit is not an option for you, the next best solution is to filter the water you drink, and the water you use when showering. Based on the EPA statement above, and recent studies from the scientific community, we now know more toxic pollutants enter our body while showering or bathing than from the water we consume.

Shower Water Filters

There are three potentially harmful pollutants in tap water which evaporate easily: chlorine, radon gas and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Once they evaporate in the hot water we can readily adsorb them through skin contact or, worse yet, by inhalation. The only way these pollutants can be removed from bath water is by using the more expensive whole house system.

But, the VOCs, chlorine and radon gas can be easily removed from the shower water with a good activated carbon filter or redox filter (which removes toxic metals and radon). The best of these systems have both filters. Shower water filters sell for about and can be very easily installed by anyone.

To be certain the pollutants mentioned above are going to be removed, you want to be sure the unit you buy is properly certified. Look for NSF/ANSI 42 certification for removal of chlorine, tastes and smells, and NSF/ANSI 53 certification for other contaminants. Also, be sure the entire unit is certified, not just the components. UL (Underwriter Laboratories) approval is also okay.

Drinking Water Filters

Filtering the drinking water makes a lot of sense on many levels, from health related issues, to making food taste better, and even your house plants will love you for it. The worst contaminants in drinking water for most of us are chlorine, lead, drugs, chemicals, bad tastes and odors, and these can be removed by using either countertop filters (if you have the room), or filters that can be installed under the counter. You want to be certain these filters meet the same certification requirements as the shower filters above.

Now, if you look at a very inexpensive water purification device, you are likely to come across a Brita pitcher. They are sold in department stores everywhere. The maintenance is again impractical, as the pitchers must be cleaned regularly.

The filtration cartridge contains granular activated carbon or GAC, which can leak "fines" into the pitcher, particularly when used for the first time. This water purification device only removes chlorine and lead. Other contaminants are not removed.

While a pitcher is inexpensive to purchase, other water purification devices cost less per gallon. The filtration cartridges have a short life span, so the cost per gallon is about a quarter. Better systems break down to less than a dime per gallon.

What's in your tap-water anyway? The most common impurity is the chemical chlorine, used by treatment facilities for disinfection, sometimes called chloramines. Anytime that chemicals are used to control bacteria and algae growth, other compounds, called trihalomethanes or THMs, are released.

THMs are known to cause cancer and nerve damage after prolonged exposure. Exposure occurs through drinking, but it also occurs in the shower. The compounds are not removed by boiling. In fact, they are released into the atmosphere.

So, it is important to look for a water purification device that removes THMs (Brita, PUR and Ever-Pure do not) and it is important to leave the filter in the "on" position for water that you cook with.

It is also important to find good water purification devices for your showerheads. Most of them do not remove THMs, so you need to compare product performance data.

The best water purification device for the kitchen costs about 5. There are many expensive products on the market that are simply not as good. When it comes to home purifiers, price is not equivalent to quality.

The best showerhead system on the market costs about . Of the five most popular products, three do not remove THMs and one is simply overpriced at over two hundred dollars.

The are 3 distinct technologies to look for in a refrigerator water filter. They are mechanical filtration (filtration down to 0.5 microns), adsorption (contaminants bond chemically to the surface of the GAC filter medium) and ion exchange (replaces harmful lead ions with healthful potassium ions).

1. Sub-micron Filtration

Potassium is one of the minerals that give your water its natural spring water taste, as well as a neutral pH. A coconut shell carbon block can be impregnated with potassium charged microporous zeolite to achieve this effect.

To filter my water, I bought a Culligan Water Filter (FM-15A), you can find it on Amazon and similar stores for .95. It looked simple and price was right.

The very next pot of coffee, I could taste an improvement. The taste of the coffee was fresher and more smooth. Overall, my water tasted better, looked cleaner and got rid of the hard water odor.

According to the packaging, it reduces chlorine taste and odor, custs back on sediments, lead, cysts and a whole bunch of other nasty sounding things.

The filter was simple to install, even for a non-handyman like me. I had it setup and running in just a few minutes.

The only drawback is that the water filter reduced the pressure. At first it was annoying, but now I've learned to do other parts of the coffee prep while the coffee pot is filling up with water. I have enough time to put in the filter and get my coffee ready to grind. It's worth the wait for better tasting coffee.

I debated getting a Brita pitcher, but I'm very satisfied with my decision. I've had Britas in the past and the water tastes better via the filter.
